FIFTY BEES

I have been privileged to take part in two of the FIFTY BEES exhibitions.
These exhibitions are organised by Lydia Needle who brings together fifty artists to make work in response to our declining bees and their environments...

FIFTY BEES 3 (2019)

Blackthorn Winter...

A piece of work made in response to the decline in environment for our native bees.
The least Furrow Bee is found in only a few (42) recorded sites in Suffolk.
The female bee relies upon the spring blossom of Blackthorn for food after first coming out of hibernation.
Paper scroll, 42 Blackthorns, Sloe berry dye.

FIFTY BEES 4 (2020)
Picture
Light at the end of the Tunnel...

A piece of work made in response to the Small Scabious Mining Bee.
This bee relies upon members of the Scabious family, particularly the beautiful Devil's Bit Scabious, for its source of pollen.
The work consists of an Artists book representing the tunnels the bee constructs for its young, and a small vial of Field Scabious, Devil's Bit Scabious and Small Scabious seed that can be broken into in an environmental emergency.
